Soujirou Sanada
MV『life is too short』の脚本・監督も担当。
Soujirou Sanada
Soujirou Sanada is a Japanese film director and philosopher.
Born in Hyogo, Japan, he currently works as a philosophy instructor at junior and senior high schools as well as at a general incorporated association.
His research spans a wide range of fields including philosophy, the arts, ethics, AI, modern intellectual history, education, thanatology, welfare thought, institutional critique, religious studies, and film theory.
His central research focus is the exploration and reconstruction of the assumptions that underlie human existence and social systems in the contemporary world. As a philosopher, Sanada is known for his critical stance toward the foundational assumptions behind ethics, knowledge, and identity in modern society. His work emphasizes a reevaluation of these underlying structures and seeks to articulate new conceptual grounds for human thought.
During high school, he was a member of the Classical Guitar and Mandolin Club, where he won first place in a national school competition.
From 2010 to 2020, he served as the guitarist, vocalist, lyricist, and composer for the punk band Kyoshin Sounds Orchestra.
He is currently also active in composing for film scores and producing music tracks.
Sanada is also active as a filmmaker. In 2020, he wrote and directed the mid-length film The Most Pure Q, and the same year wrote and directed the short film life is too short, a music video piece for the vocal album of renowned actor Koichi Sato.
In 2024, his first feature film Okamoto Manta (English title: OKAMOTO), which he wrote and directed, was selected by numerous international film festivals upon its release and received multiple awards.
His work was praised for its striking compositions, unique visual tone and color palette, radically free creativity, and philosophically structured screenplay. Despite being his debut feature, the film achieved the rare distinction of being nominated for the "Rebels With a Cause" section at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival — one of the world’s top fifteen festivals.
The following year, in 2025, he won the Grand Prix in the CINEREBEL competition at the 42nd Munich International Film Festival — the first Japanese director to do so.
He is now regarded as one of the most promising new voices in Japanese cinema.
